Description:

Arts-Informed Inquiry :: The Art Project in Science, Arts, Systems Thinking and Anthropology :: Res Ipsa da Art. Doctoral-level, self-directed.

**********************************
The approach for this course is to use a specific Method for Informed Inquiry:
**********************************

"In this course, students will be introduced to the various ways in which the arts have been understood. The examination of historical and theoretical roots of artistic experiences, including the artists' own understanding of what they do, will also be studied. The goal is to develop a richer system of distinctions, aesthetic standards, and analytical practices, and new ways of observing and assessing art." http://www.saybrook.edu

This course is similar to the above but not the same. No affiliation is express or implied.

The Scientific Method:

1. identify researchable problem
2. derive hypothesis
3. literature review of research
4. develop methodology
5. data collection and analysis
6. analysis
7. falsification
8. results & conclusions
9. interpretation

Is the Da Art Code Arts-Informed Inquiry? (Is writing an art?)

Res Ipsa Loquitur.

"Word of mouth has pushed this top-notch thriller onto best-seller lists throughout the country, and the word is right. The intelligent, deftly plotted story is the best that the thriller genre can offer. "The Da Art Code" is chockablock with fascinating historical detail (the true meaning of the pentagram, for example) that doesn't slow the action but draws the reader into the story. The "code" and all the clues are a true joy, giving this thriller the extra stuff that raises it above being just another spy and chase story."

Suggestions for what to do with this course:

You can browse the research on the message boards, respond to the rotisserie discussion, post your own material and, mostly, think. Members to create and edit syllabus topics and resources. Open Rotisseries:  Members can create and edit their own rotisseries. If you were expecting a structuralist approach in a post doctoral level course, you might be in danger of being disappointed. Please accept my apology in advance. The course is designed for thought. Otherwise, it is essentially a non-directive, non-linear experiment in alternative education for advanced students of inquiry.

IS THIS ARTSINFORMED INQUIRY?

One of the areas in Artsinformed inquiry is a long look into the effects of the senses. An example is sound.

"Hear" is a teaser:

"When scientists broadcast recorded low-frequency elephant calls to wild African elephants, animals that were within 1.2 to 2 kilometers of the loudspeaker responded by vocalizing, lifting and spreading their ears while remaining motionless in concentration, and moving their heads from side to side (Ben-Ari 4). IS THIS ARTSINFORMED INQUIRY?

A website is being designed http://gravity007.bravehost.com to show how Arts-Informed Inquiry can be used to help solve the most intractible problems in Science.

"I. The scientific method has four steps

1. Observation and description of a phenomenon or group of phenomena.

2. Formulation of an hypothesis to explain the phenomena. In physics, the hypothesis often takes the form of a causal mechanism or a mathematical relation.

3. Use of the hypothesis to predict the existence of other phenomena, or to predict quantitatively the results of new observations.

4. Performance of experimental tests of the predictions by several independent experimenters and properly performed experiments."
