Viacom v Youtube and Google, Inc. - Yan Shi

by Copyright Group Show/Hide
In March 2007, Viacom sued Youtube and its parent Google for copyright infringements and claimed over $1 billion dollars in damages in the lawsuit. Viacom had sent 100,000 Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) takedown notices before filing to sue Youtube and Google. Several concerns were surrounded around the interpretation of the safe-harbor provisions of DMCA. The case officially settled after seven years of back and forth. The court ultimately ruled in Youtube and Google’s favor, stating that the safe-harbor provisions of the DMCA protected them from user-posted content that infringed on copyright.
